Papers used to develop this set include vintage stock from the Library and Archives Canada (LAC), Canadian Conservation Institute (CCI) and National Gallery of Art, Washington. The sets include 4 samples for each available paper type, 1 printed and processed, 1 printed, processed and toned with selenium (Kodak Rapid Selenium Toner), 1 printed, processed and toned with a sulfur toner (Kodak Sepia Toner) and one fixed only (white) sheet. Pertinent information regarding processing and toning will accompany the samples. Currently 8 different paper types are available and have been printed and processed. The weight of the paper can vary from a thin single weight paper to a thick double weight and surface textures range from glossy to matte. Other papers will be added to the sets as viable papers become available. All of the papers are silver gelatin emulsions on both fibre based and resin coated paper supports. Some of the papers are fogged, a result of the natural aging of the papers, all of which are well passed their expiry dates.
The intent is to create a reference set of samples that will assist curators, collections, specialists, etc. in identifying, authenticating and dating materials under their stewardship. The negative was created by the Chicago Albumen Works and includes a grey scale, resolution target and partial image of young girl included in the Photographic Print Sample Set marketed by PMG. This set was created by the Chicago Albumen Works and includes 5 different paper types printed from the same negative. It is intended that this sample sets will also be distributed by the Photographic Materials Group of the American Institute for Conservation.
Forty-eight sets have been created in total. Within each set there are eight different paper types. Due to a finite quantity of some of the paper types included in this initial set means they will no longer be available after this initial offering.
